DESCRIPTION
Students will be inducted into the world of the archaeologist. Alongside a general discussion of the nature of archaeology, students will be regaled with stories of what it is like to be 'in the trenches' in reality! Melissa will amuse and inspire with stories of excavating stinky Roman toilets, encountering 2nd millenium BC tomb robbers, and getting chased off-site by wild donkeys. Students will also have the opportunity to pick an archaeologist's brain, and ask any questions they have that are archaeologically related. Students will be given a replica artefact (such as varieties of pottery, coins, beads, shells, stamp and cylinder seals, bronze jewellery), to describe, analyse and record using genuine archaeological recording methods. In this way they will see that there is far more to archaeology than just digging, but will they be able to successfully analyse and interpret their window to the past? Students regroup to discuss what they have learned today about archaeology. |
